The first side is more traditional pop and R&B, while the side 2 tracks are bit more experimental. Side 1 Tracks - Janet separates the album into 2 different sides. Now without further ado, lets get into the music! She also decided to reunite with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis after nearly a decade since they last made music together. The album would be released under her own independent record label Rhythm Nation making her one of the first female African American to create and own a label.

In 2009 Janet experienced the sudden death of her brother Michael and the end of her 7 year relationship with Jermaine Dupri.
